Making a Metal Sculpture

Making a welded metal sculpture can be a rewarding and creative process.

Here are some general steps and information to guide you.

1. Conceptualize: Start by brainstorming ideas and determining the theme, form, and style of your sculpture. Sketch your design or create a 3D model to visualize it.

2. Gather materials and tools: Identify the type of metal you want to use, such as steel, aluminum, stainless steel or copper. Consider using recycled materials. Acquire the necessary tools, including welding equipment, grinders, cutters, hammers and clamps.

3. Safety precations: Metalwork involves heat, sparks and sharp edges, so take safety precautions. Wear protective gear such as gloves, goggles, and a welding mask. Work in a well ventilated area and have a fire extinguisher nearby.

4. Prepair the metal: Cut or shape the metal using appropriate tools. Remove any unwanted burrs, sharp edges, orrust. Use a file or grinder to smooth the surface.s like lighting, envirnment

5. Joining techniques: Decide on a suitable method to join the metal pieces together. Welding is commonly used for metal sculptures, but other techniques like brazing or soldering may be applicable too. Ensure you have the necessary skills and knowledge for the chosen method.

6. Assembling and shaping: Asseble the individual metal pieces according to your design. Use clamps or welding to hold them together temporarily. Shape the metal by bending, forming, or hammering to achieve the desired contours and texture.

7. Finishing touches: Take time to refineand polish your sculpture. Remove any welding marks, imperfections, or excess materials. Use sandpaper, grinders, orother finishing tools to smooth the surface and create the desired texture.

8. Surface treatment: Consider applying surface treatments to enhance the appearance and protect the metal. Options include painting, patinas, powder coating, or clear sealents. Research the appropriate techniques for your chosen metal and desired finish.

9. Display or installation: Decide how to display or install your metal sculpture. Consider factors like lighting, environment, and safety. It could be mounted on a pedestal, attched to a wall, or presented in an outdoor setting.

Remember, metal sculpting requires practice, patience, and creativity. It's important to start with smaller projects to build your skills and confidence before attempting larger and more complex sculptures.

I was asked to write a blog for The Metal Sculpture Studios of Cincinnati Ohio, this is my version.

I promise we are going to have fun and learn cool stuff and create beautiful art, I will tell you about our projects that we do and share them with everyone and tell you how you can become a part of the art/metal world through a project of your very own from the Metal Sculpture Studios too! We will have discussions on the process, answer questions or concerns, talk about ideas even go on location to project installations!

I'll get started by giving a brief explanation of who we are and what we do. We are the Metal Sculpture Studios, the owner/creator is James Perkins, he began his metal career in high school where he studied welding, from there he would obtain several Certifications for Aerospace Welding ( AWS D17.1 Fusion Welding for Aerospace)  and work at many Metal Fabrication Shops. While he loved welding being confined to a repetitive, unimaginative job was not where he wanted to stay. He wanted to share his creativity and help others realize how metal art and metal sculpture can improve their lives, businesses, public spaces and comunities. So, Metal Sculpture Studios was born. The Studios have been creating Commissioned Artworks for over 16 years and James has been welding for 33 years. He is definitely the go to guy when you need it done right for a fair price.

What we do, we do anything metal, focusing on Art and Sculpture of course, with the latest large Abstract Sculpture for The Marriott Ac Hotels Cincinnati at the Banks is a main focal point in their entry courtyard. The Sculpture stands 14 ft tall and leaves you wandering just how in the heck did we get it together lol. It's a beautiful piece for sure, but you can see for yourself in person the next time you catch a Cincinnati Reds baseball game or are enjoying a night at the hotel. Or of course you can check out the pics bellow provided for your viewing pleasure!

We also do specialty pieces specific per customer such as our latest motorcycle metal Sculpture project. Yes, you read that right I said motorcycle sculpture. This wonderful client came to the Studios with a request for a horse sculpture for her Harley Davidson.  She wanted a horse head on the front fender and its tail on the rear but let James make all decisions where the design was concerned. Once again another beautiful piece of art was created.

As a welder, what would be the innovative welding method to master?

Welding is a wonderful way to create unique things and enhances your creativity. Whether you are a hobby welder trying to earn money with little jobs or a professional artist offering welded sculptures for sale, using welding to create art is an amazing way to express yourself. If you know how to transform metal into a beautiful sculpture perfectly, you can make almost anything in the world.

"You are a welder if you have sunburn in the winter.”

There are plenty of ways to convert metal into creative things, and generally, there is no “one size fits all” thing. So, it would be best to find out the method that suits you.

Here are some essential methods that you need to consider. Have a look:

One thing about Recycled Welding Art is that without a doubt, you will never run out of materials to utilize, and if you do, there is no need to spend a lot of money on it. Many people out there are willing to give away scrap metal for free or at a reasonable price. And because it is a form of art, you can use anything you can get your hands on, such as bearings, chains, bolts, washers, nuts, sprockets etc.

TIG welding method:

It is one of the most useful methods for artists who want to create beautiful sculptures. It is highly used to weld elusive materials, including stainless steel, aluminum, copper, and magnesium. The method itself looks clean and spatter-free.

On the other hand, it is quite tricky to learn if you have never welded in your life. You need to practice a lot, and once you master it, you should never run out of projects to work upon.

TIG bead:

It is imperative to remember that TIG is generally used indoors because the materials need to be clean before welding. The second most important reason is that to have an excellent weld, a shielding gas is utilized, and air circulation can blow the shielding gas away.

MIG welding method:

The MIG (Metal Inert Gas Welding)is also a great method for your projects. It is very easy to learn because you just need to tack metal together.

With the MIG method, you can easily weld mild steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. In addition to this, it can be used for outdoor as well as indoors welding. You only need to make a few adjustments to your machine. The most essential would be to change the wire to a flux-cored and reverse the machine's electric polarity. It also gives you the ability to weld slightly thicker materials.

Some extra tools you might need in welding:

As a Welding Artist, you would possibly need some more tools to get work done efficiently.

  • Welding helmet
  • Welding gloves
  • Angle grinder
  • Torch kit
  • Plasma Cutter

What is Public Art?

Public Art is an art form that is commonly found in spaces accessible to everyone. Generally, it is situated in a permanent outdoor location. A large number of artists who create public art involves directly with the location when designing their artwork.

“Public art is not an art form. It is a way of developing the changing environment through the arts”.

Types of public art:

For a better understanding, public art is divided into two different types, such as

  • Officially sanctioned public art
  • Independent public art

Officially sanctioned public art: These are the officially commissioned public art installations that can be found in almost every city throughout the world. The official commissioned public art includes civic statuaries, monuments, and memorials.

Independent public art: Without being sanctioned by an official authority, the independent public art installation is created and staged in the public domain. These art installations can also be found in almost every city throughout the world. The arts include permanent sculptural works, temporal installations, indoor public art installations, and many more.

“There are two different languages. First is verbal, which separates people, and second is the visual that is understood by everybody.”

And, my friends, public art is a second language that everyone can easily understand.

Why public art matters?

  • Everyone can gain value like social, cultural, and economic through public art.
  • This type of art is a unique part of public history and developing culture.
  • It helps reflect and reveals society, adds meaning to cities, and uniqueness to communities.
  • It improves the environment and revitalizes public spaces.
  • It provides a connection between the past, present, and future.
  • People do not need to pay any charge for looking at public art.
  • Public art installations give the community a specific identity, especially in terms of what a particular town looks like.
  • Public art breaks the trend of blandness and sameness and gives communities a strong sense of place and identity.
  • When people think about memorable places, they think about their icons and those creative artists who captured the spirit and atmosphere of their cultural milieu.

The artist as a contributor to cultural value:

Public art brings artists and their artistic vision into the community decision-making process. In addition to the amazing benefits of having works of art in public places, artists give their valuable contributions in planning public spaces and amenities. To inspire creativity in others, they bring their own creative skills set to the conversation. Public art is a range of the varied intentions and roles that artists may bring to a project or environment.

Artists certainly bring personal and unique interpretations to each idea, site, social construct, and aesthetic potential.

Final words:

Public art today is a prominent and popular art form that is available in places such as plazas, pedestrian areas, squares, urban centers, thoroughfares, etc.

Incorporate Public Art & Park Sculptures With Millennial Factors

Over the past five decades, art has increasingly been used in public parks to develop visitors’ interest and connection with the place. Research shows that the parks usually promote well-being and refresh local economies, and individualize parks through public art and sculptures can boost the space and can connect the site to a larger community.

Rose Park Sculpture

Public art and park sculptures attract attention and connect artists with different communities and improve the public appreciation of art. This kind of relation nurtures the place and evokes not only a personal connection but also lead the site towards good vibes. But to incorporate public art and park sculptures, there are various factors like cost, artwork medium, community support, preservation, and relevancy that needs to be considered at the priority. Public art is not limited to small areas; it includes large, non-traditional locations, temporary artworks, subjects, goals, site defining installations, and more. Moreover, it is a surprising fact to know that successful public art and park sculptures projects vary as the parks themselves.

Think Big-Go Big:

There is a vast variety of art projects which include site-specific, community-based traditional, temporary, and more. Still, nothing makes a statement and recognition to the art than a large public art piece created by the artists. However, each artwork has a different process, but these artworks are high-dollar endeavors that not only attract the usual park visitor but can also become a center of attraction for tourists and a broader story about the area.

Tell A Story:

Every location has a unique story to tell, and using site-specific artwork will beautify the site as a whole. It will provide a deep connection to the different communities to a large extent. However, art sculpture for a street corner is not the same as the sculpture designed for a specific site. The park sculpture or a site sculpture is more focused on its audience, environmental conditions, and the history of the place.

Here, the artists face different kinds of challenges, like maintaining an open space for long until the sculpture gets completed.

Going forward, public art can easily tell a story to a large audience and can spark a conversation with the communities. Public art provides a different kind of experience to the viewers and reflects the site spirits, value, vibe, and quality meaningfully. It adds color and innovation to an ignorant public place and shows unique characters and cultural diversity of the community.

Multisensory:

Multisensory is an artwork that goes beyond the visual and gives senses to the non-traditional visitors to touch the imagination of their soul. Multisensory art for park sculptures can provide sound, touch, and smell to the art and make the visitors’ experience superb. Multisensory has always fascinated the artists as they can play with their skills in unique ways and can make it available for people who are not able to see arts with visual aspects.

Around 20 of the population are suffering from some level of disability; therefore, designing public sculptures in multisensory style is an approach to invite this understated section of the population.

Note: Many artists work with volunteers and other helpers to portray features of schools, including miniature horses and the children around.

Be Imaginative:Rose Sculpture

Attracting visitors with imaginative artworks functions well to create a lasting impression. When an artist portrays his imagination, it becomes challenging for him to drop a strong image, but this image is something that brings a different kind of connection between different communities and cultures.

Moreover, at this point, some areas are a challenge to create exciting and peaceful sculpture, but a combination of creativity and imagination can cover these places into a new space. While playing with the imagination, artists generally use different shapes and symbols and a combination of bright colors to energize the area with the sculpture.

Keep It Changing:

With temporary public art, a site remains exciting and new for visitors. Many organizations establish temporary arts to exhibit new programs with regular solicitations and funding. The temporary artworks can start from established professional artists to student designs. These rotating designs keep the public informed about new and changing installations in an effective way that pushes their interest and visit.

While incorporating public art and park sculpture, the size of the site or the budget of your park does not matter. What matters is the opportunity you receive and the way you complete it by your artwork. Be innovative with the site and look for the options to place art uniquely. For those with the restricted budget- artwork does not need to be expensive- here, the imagination, colors, space, and the collaboration with different artists work.

Moreover, public art and park sculptures reflect the cultural diversity, community, and invites the new vision with positive vibes. Besides, public art is also a strong source to reduce strain and offer a beautiful way to relax.
